EP273: Giving Your Kids Clothing a Second "Life" with Hand Me Up

As parents, we all know how quickly our children outgrow their clothes, and how tempting it can be to simply throw them away and buy new ones. But with the life cycle of kids' clothes being much shorter compared to adult garments, this can lead to a significant amount of waste. In 2018, the EPA reported, 17 million tons of textile waste ended up in landfills, compared to the 2.5 million tons that were recycled, it's clear that their work is more important than ever. That's where small business (and my guests today), Hand Me Up comes in! Hand Me Up's mission is to promote a circular approach focused on reuse and repair, which is key to extending the life of textiles. Join me for this interview with founders, Kara and Nicole to learn more about their inspiration, mission, and impact.

About Hand Me Up

Kara Livingston and Nicole Boynton are high school friends turned business co-founders. From high school buddies going through each other's closets for outfits to wear to mom life friends going through their kids' closets to keep their growing kids clothed, they have been friends through many ages and stages of life. The duo started blogging, podcasting and making planners as Simply Whole Moms. They talked to a lot of moms during this time and realized the overwhelming task of managing kids' closets and wanted to do something to help moms tame the overwhelm. Hand Me Up was launched in 2021 and has reached over 20 states and handed up almost 1,000 items of clothing in their first year.
