Minimalist Mantra of the Week: Use It Up
I do it all the time. I have a favorite. It could be a snack, perfume, notebook, or candle. This favorite is a consumable product, but I don’t want to consume it too fast because it’s precious to me. I want to save it.
What ends up happening? I don’t use it.
The ultimate example is the bath set. You know the one. The fancy mini soaps and lotions that you put in the guest bathroom.
You may have gotten them as a gift and thought they were too fancy for everyday use, so you put them in the guest bathroom for them to be used as a special treat for your guests.
They sit there dusty and sometimes still wrapped in their cellophane.
No one wants to use them because they don’t want to be the ones to sully your perfect bath set.
That is why our Minimalist Mantra of the Week is: Use It Up
Rip open the wrapping and put that bath set to good use. I’m sure the person who gifted you that bath set didn’t want it to become a museum piece. They wanted you to enjoy it!
Now the case may be that you don’t enjoy that particular scent or maybe you’re allergic to the lotion and that’s why you doomed the bath set to the guest bathroom. In that case, pay it forward. Give it to the next guest who proclaims it’s her favorite scent.
There is nothing sadder than unloved and forgotten items taking up space in your home.
At the risk of being dramatic, let that bath set fulfill its destiny! Use it up!
Think of other lovely things in your home that yearn to be loved.
What about those unused gift cards taking up space in your wallet? The perfect occasion to go to that fancy restaurant may never present itself. The time is now. Use it up!
The fancy truffle oil that came in that Christmas gift basket has an expiration date. Don’t let it go to waste. Use it up!
The chiffon top you bought for special occasions would look amazing with jeans. Wear it out and use it up!
Same goes for the beautiful pendant you inherited from your grandmother. She wanted you to enjoy it, not let it tarnish in the bottom of your jewelry box. Shine it up and wear it too.
The beautiful stationery with your name embossed on it deserves to be sent with pride. Use it up!
That leather-bound notebook your roommate got you as a college graduation gift was meant to be scribbled in – even if it’s only for toddler doodles. Use it up!
I could give a dozen more examples but I hope you get the point. We can use these precious things or lose them. Either way, make a concerted effort to enjoy life’s little pleasures and…
Use it up!
Can't remember that thing we said?
